Introduction

Final Fantasy VII is rightfully considered one of the most influential JRPGs of all time. As the first Final Fantasy title on PlayStation, it launched in 1997 and catapulted the series into a new dimension. After more than 25 years, the question remains: Can the original still convince today?

Story and Characters

The tale of Cloud Strife's journey from simple mercenary to world savior remains remarkably multi-layered even today. The narrative begins seemingly simple with the eco-terrorists AVALANCHE fighting against the Shinra Corporation, but evolves into a complex web of identity crises, environmental themes, and cosmic threats.

Particularly impressive is the character development. Cloud himself experiences one of the most believable personality developments in gaming, while supporting characters like Tifa, Aerith, and Sephiroth became icons of gaming culture. The famous scene in the Forgotten City remains one of the most emotional moments in video game history to this day.

Gameplay and Combat System

The Active Time Battle system (ATB) still represents the perfect compromise between strategic planning and action-packed dynamics. Each character has a filling ATB gauge that determines when actions can be executed. This mechanic creates constant tension as players must plan their moves while enemies continue to act.

Limit Breaks add additional tactical depth and spectacular moments to combat. Each character possesses unique special attacks that charge through damage taken and can turn the tide in critical situations.

The Materia System

The heart of Final Fantasy VII is undoubtedly the innovative Materia system. These magical orbs can be equipped in weapons and armor, granting characters abilities, spells, or status improvements. The genius lies in the flexibility: any character can theoretically fill any role, depending on their Materia configuration.

Particularly interesting are the combination possibilities. Support Materias can be linked with other Materias to create powerful effects. A simple healing spell becomes a group-wide mega-heal through the right combination.

Graphics and Technical Implementation

Visually, Final Fantasy VII clearly shows its age, especially in the overworld character models. Cloud's famous "Popeye arms" have become a running gag. Nevertheless, the battle animations and cinematic sequences still possess a certain charm today.

The real strength lies in the art design. Midgar's steampunk aesthetic, the organic forms of life energy, and Tetsuya Nomura's iconic character design are timeless. Every environment tells a story and creates a believable, living world.

Soundtrack and Audio

Nobuo Uematsu created one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time with Final Fantasy VII. From the epic "Opening - Bombing Mission" to the melancholic "Aerith's Theme" - every track is perfectly matched to its respective scene.

Particularly noteworthy is "One-Winged Angel," Sephiroth's theme in the final battle. This composition with Latin choir was revolutionary and set new standards for video game music. Even today, you get goosebumps when the melody first plays.

Content and Replay Value

With a main story of about 40 hours and countless side missions, Final Fantasy VII offers enormous scope. The optional superboss battles against Ruby and Emerald WEAPON rank among the hardest challenges in gaming history.

Replay value is very high due to multiple secrets, hidden Materia, and various Limit Breaks. Additionally, the New Game+ system motivates players to start an optimized second playthrough with acquired knowledge.

Conclusion

Final Fantasy VII is and remains a milestone of the medium. Despite technical signs of aging, the innovative gameplay mechanics, profound story, and legendary soundtrack still fully convince today. It's a game that forever changed the JRPG landscape and whose influence can be felt in countless subsequent titles. For genre fans, it's an absolute must-play; for everyone else, it's a fascinating insight into video game history.
