Wolcen 2: The French Diablo Clone Returns

Wolcen 2 will launch in Early Access in 2027 and full release in 2028.

The developers at Wolcen Studio have announced Wolcen 2, the direct sequel to their 2020 action RPG Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem. The new title will be released for Windows PC via Steam as well as for the latest consoles, with an Early Access launch planned for 2027 and a full release scheduled for 2028. The reveal took place at gamescom 2026, where a first trailer and gameplay footage were shown.

Originally, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem was known as a French Diablo clone, featuring fast-paced hack‑and‑slash combat, an extensive skill tree, and a dark fantasy setting. However, the game suffered from technical stability issues and unbalanced gameplay decisions at launch, leading to a mixed reception from the community. Despite lacking a major commercial success, a dedicated fan base emerged that recognized the title's potential.

With Wolcen 2, the studio is building on a completely new engine that, according to early insights from gamescom, promises smoother combat animations, dynamic weather effects, and improved physics. Additionally, the progression system has been overhauled to allow players to choose between distinct specializations, each offering unique playstyles. The developers emphasize that balancing will be thoroughly refined to provide a fairer progression experience.

In a landscape dominated by titles such as Diablo Immortal, Path of Exile, and Grim Dawn, Wolcen 2 must establish itself as a distinct alternative. The blend of classic top‑down perspective, modern graphical effects, and deep character development could appeal both to long‑time fans of the genre and newcomers seeking a demanding action RPG. With the rise of live‑service ARPGs, the project faces the challenge of marrying tradition with innovation.

For the nerd community, the announcement is a beacon of hope: a game that builds on the lessons of its predecessor while striving to meet the expectations of a Diablo‑style experience could reignite discussions about genre standards. If Wolcen 2 delivers on its promises, it has the potential to become a reference title for future action RPGs. Initial reactions at gamescom suggest a promising experience that may convince the community.
