Final Fantasy VII Remake: Trilogy Conceived as More Than Fan Project

The director of the trilogy clarifies: The Final Fantasy VII Remake was never conceived as a pure fan project, but as a high-quality blockbuster.

The long-awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake universe is approaching its completion, yet the vision behind the adaptation remains a central topic for the community. Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the trilogy, has now made it clear that the project was conceived from the very beginning as a high-quality blockbuster production and was never intended to be treated as a pure fan project. This clear attitude shapes the design of the new adaptation of the classic by Square Enix down to the last detail and sharply distinguishes the project from mere amateur work.

The structure of the trilogy itself was never up for debate. While the division of the material into several large sections initially triggered criticism, the production team confirmed that this architecture was a fixed part of the plan and appeared non-negotiable. Hamaguchi repeatedly emphasized that the core story of the original must remain identical so that the emotional foundations of the narrative stay intact. At the same time, new ideas have been integrated that make the setting more accessible for modern players. The producer of the Remake also openly explained that changes to the plot were absolutely necessary to avoid the risk of the players becoming bored in the long term.

Special attention is currently given to the add-on adventure Revelation. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that this part is to offer a significantly more extensive endgame than its predecessors. This is also reflected in his own engagement with the material: he has reportedly played through the third part of the trilogy more than 40 times to understand every nuance. The main part Rebirth also does not simply want to re-package the old material. According to the team, the game is to surprise fans even though they already know the story from the original. In addition, expansions for iconic characters such as Sephiroth and Vincent have been announced, further widening the range of gameplay opportunities.

For the nerd community, this interpretation means that it can count on a respect for the cultural object that goes beyond mere fan service. If a director who has checked his own work dozens of times seeks the balance between innovation and loyalty, the probability increases that the finale of the saga will not only be technically impressive but also content-wise satisfying. The road to the third part has been long, but the statements so far give hope that at the end a work stands that continues the Final Fantasy VII myth worthily.
